Born in [[Kolar Gold Fields]], [[Karnataka]], Sampingiraj started his professional career with [[Hindustan Aeronautics Limited S.C.|HAL]], then of [[I-League]] during the [[2010–11 I-League|2010–11]] season.<ref name=GCSS2013/> However, during a match against [[Pune F.C.|Pune]] the very same season, Sampingiraj suffered a ligament tear which was not properly diagnosed by his club, but was noticed and dealt with at the camp for the Indian national youth team,<ref name=GCSS2011>{{cite web|title=Shankar's comeback trail|url=http://www.gcsstars.com/2011/07/shankar-s-comeback-trail.html|work=Garden City Soccer Stars|accessdate=21 August 2013}}</ref> eventually leading to surgery on his right knee and missing substantial game time.<ref name=GCSS2011/>
