Satyapal Dang was born on 4 October 1920<ref name="State Religion and Politics">{{cite book | title=State Religion and Politics | publisher=GPH | author=Satyapal Dang | year=2004 | pages=345 | isbn=978-8121208505}}</ref> in [[Gujranwala]] of the erstwhile [[Punjab Province, British India]] and did his early schooling in [[Lahore]].<ref name="Communist legend">{{cite web | url=http://www.frontline.in/other/obituary/communist-legend/article4840752.ece | title=Communist legend | publisher=Frontline | date=12 July 2013 | access-date=25 May 2016}}</ref> Getting involved in the [[Indian freedom movement]] during his student days, he worked with the leftist wing of the [[Indian National Congress]] in the beginning but moved the [[Communist Party of India]] and became an active worker in the ''Bombay Commune'' of the party in the 1940s.
