Of the 24 people who died, 22 were residents of Vilantara village of [[West Kallada]]. As soon as the boat reached the middle of the lake, it began to sink due to overcrowding and poor weather conditions. Seeing this, another boat came from the shore. Those on the first boat moved to the second boat causing both to sink.<ref>{{cite web |last1=ലേഖകൻ |first1=മാധ്യമം |title=ശാസ്താംകോട്ട കായൽ ദുരന്തത്തിന് 41 ആണ്ട് {{!}} Madhyamam |url=https://www.madhyamam.com/kerala/local-news/kollam/sasthamkotta/41-years-of-sastamcotta-backwater-disaster-1118045 |website=www.madhyamam.com |language=ml |date=15 January 2023}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last1=Daily |first1=Keralakaumudi |title=ശാസ്താംകോട്ട കായൽദുരന്തത്തിന് 42 ആണ്ട് |url=https://keralakaumudi.com/news/news.php?id=1230353&u=local-news |website=Keralakaumudi Daily |language=en}}</ref><br />
