The area was named ' ki sarai', a ''[[Caravanserai|sarai]]'', or rest house for travelers or caravans and royal route from [[Mughal Empire|Mughal]] imperial courts and [[Chandni Chowk]] to their retreat at [[Mehrauli]] some {{cvt|32|km}} away.
