In 1935, he and novelist [[Mulk Raj Anand]] went to Paris to attend the International Congress for Defense of Culture organised by [[André Gide]]. Influenced by the conference he established the Indian Progressive Writers&amp;#039; Association in London.&amp;lt;ref name=AngareyRupa /&amp;gt; The first conference of the association was held on 9 and 10 April 1936. After returning to India, he organised the first conference of the Progressive Writers’ Association in Lucknow on April 9, 1936, and started working as its general secretary. He was nominated in-charge of the Delhi branch of the CPI in 1939 and was jailed for two years during the Second World War for opposing Indian participation in it. After his release in&lt;br /&gt;

It had stories by Sajjad Zaheer, [[Ahmed Ali (writer)|Ahmed Ali]], [[Rashid Jahan]] and Mahmud-uz-Zafar and was banned in 1933 by the [[British Raj|British Government of India]] &amp;quot;for hurting the religious susceptibilities of a section of the community.&amp;quot;&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite web|title=Angaaray|url=http://www.penguinbooksindia.com/en/content/angaaray|publisher=Penguin Books India}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;  This gave rise to the [[Progressive Writers&amp;#039; Movement|All-India Progressive Writers&amp;#039; Movement]] &amp;amp; Association of which both Sajjad Zaheer and Ahmed Ali were co-founders.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{Cite book|title=Communism in Pakistan : politics and class activism 1947-1972|last=1961-|first=Ali, Kamran Asdar|isbn=9781784532000|location=London|pages=83|oclc=913850929|date = 30 June 2015}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;  In 1935 he wrote a novel called &amp;#039;&amp;#039;London ki Ek Raat&amp;#039;&amp;#039; based on his experience of London. In 1944 a collection of letters to his wife from the prisons of Lucknow and Allahabad was published as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Nuqush-e-Zindan&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. He also wrote &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Roshnai&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, a history-cum-memoir of the early days of the progressive movement (1956), &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Zikr-e-Hafiz&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, a critical look at the works of the legendary Persian poet [[Hafez (poet)|Hafiz]] (1956), and a collection of poems in &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[vers libre]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; called &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Pighla Neelam &amp;#039;&amp;#039;(1964).&amp;lt;ref name=TheWire /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In addition Zaheer also served as the editor of a number of papers and magazines throughout his career including &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bharat&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Chingari&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Qaumi Jung&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Naya Zamana&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Awami Daur&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Hayat&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref name=AngareyPenguin /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=AngareyRupa/&amp;gt; He was also an avid translator, producing Urdu versions of Tagore&amp;#039;s Gora, Voltaire&amp;#039;s Candide and Shakespeare&amp;#039;s Othello.&amp;lt;ref name=AngareyPenguin /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=TheHinduNoorani /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
