S. Gunasekaran was born in [[Madurai]] on 21 December 1955. == Politics ==
Gunasekaran is a former member of [[Sivaganga]] Municipality and Sivaganga Panchayat. He has also been District Secretary for the [[Communist Party of India]] (CPI).<ref name="bio"/>

Gunasekaran was first elected to the [[Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly]] as a CPI candidate from the Sivaganga constituency in the [[2006 Tamil Nadu state assembly election|2006 elections]].<ref>[http://eci.nic.in/eci_main/StatisticalReports/SE_2006/StatReport_TN_2006.pdf 2006 Tamil Nadu Election Results, Election Commission of India]</ref> This was despite complications caused by a rebel [[Indian National Congress]] politician, [[V. Rajasekaran]], who stood as an independent when his party chose to ally with the CPI in the constituency rather than field its own candidate. Baskaran]] of the AIADMK.
