Gopalachari was born into a [[Iyengar|Vaishnavite Brahmin]] family in [[Sarukkai]], [[Madras Presidency]] in the year 1850.<ref name="nayarp337">{{cite book|title=The decline of Nayar dominance: society and politics in Travancore, 1847-1908|pages=337|first=Robin |last=Jeffrey |author-link=Robin Jeffrey |publisher=Holmes & Meier Publishers|year=1976|isbn=0841901848|id=}}</ref> He graduated in law and worked as a ''vakil'' in Madurai before being appointed a sub-judge on 21 March 1885.<ref name="nayarp337" /> In June 1903, he was confirmed as officiating district and sessions judge.{{citation needed|date=March 2013}} Gopalachari was serving as District Judge of [[Tinnevely]] when he was appointed Diwan of Travancore in 1906.<ref name="nayarp337" /><br />
