Balakrishnan has a Bachelor’s degree in [[Biology]] and a Master’s in [[Zoology]]. She received her [[Doctor of Philosophy|PhD]] in [[Behavioural genetics|behavior genetics]] in 1991 from the [[Tata Institute of Fundamental Research]] (TIFR) in [[Mumbai]], [[India]].
