The son of Philip Bury Ramsbotham and Florence Elizabeth King, he was born at [[Prestwich]] in April 1880. While serving with the [[45th Rattray's Sikhs]], he was made an acting [[Captain (British Army and Royal Marines)|captain]] in February 1918,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=31131|date=17 January 1919|page=912}}</ref> a rank which he relinquished in March 1919 following the end of the war.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=31637|date=11 November 1919|page=13675}}</ref> Ramsbotham was appointed a Member of the [[Order of the British Empire]] in the [[1919 Birthday Honours]].<ref>{{London Gazette|city=Edinburgh|issue=13460|date=6 June 1919|page=2080}}</ref> In 1920, he was appointed principal of [[Hooghly Collegiate School|Hooghly College]] at [[Chandannagar]],<ref name="BOOK"/> before returning to England to study once more at Magdalen College, where he gained his [[Bachelor of Letters]] in 1924.

Returning to India, Ramsbotham was appointed principal of [[Presidency University, Kolkata|Presidency College Calcutta]] in 1928, with him later holding the same position at [[Chittagong College]].<ref name="BOOK"/> After the war, Ramsbotham had been a member of the Army of India Reserve of Officers where he reached the rank of [[Major (United Kingdom)|major]].
