Wahi was born in [[Khujwa]] Village in [[Siwan District]] ([[Bihar]]), India. His father was Syed Zahoor Hussain, who served as the regional [[zamindar]] and also worked as police inspector for several years. His father also worked at the Iranian Embassy after leaving the police department, and died in January 1962.&lt;br /&gt;

Wahi began writing while in middle school. During his time at [[Patna College]], his poetry began to flourish. At first his poetic style was serious, but by 1950, he began to explore more [[sarcasm]] and [[humor]]. Thereafter he continued the sarcasm and humor genres.&lt;br /&gt;

His major poetic influences include Josh Malihabadi and [[Mir Taqi Mir]].&lt;br /&gt;
