It is situated at the base of the [[Pir Panjal Range]] of the [[Himalayas]]. It falls under the administrative division of tehsil [[Beerwah, Jammu and Kashmir|Beerwah]] one of the nine tehsils of district [[Budgam district|Budgam]]. It is about 23.7 km (14.7 mile) via [[Beerwah, Jammu and Kashmir|Beerwah]]-[[Budgam]] Road from district headquarters [[Budgam]], 7 km (4.3 mi) from sub-district headquarters [[Beerwah, Jammu and Kashmir|Beerwah]], known as the [[Beerwah, Jammu and Kashmir|Gateway of Doodhpathri]] and [[Beerwah, Jammu and Kashmir|Gateway of Tosamaidan]], and 29 km (18 mile) away from [[Srinagar]], the summer capital of [[Jammu and Kashmir (union territory)|Jammu and Kashmir]]. ==Etymology==
Local tale says that the name Rathsun is derived from [[Persian language|Persian]] words ''rath'' "jealousness" and ''sun'' "gold". It is said that the famous saint of [[Kashmir]] [[Nund Rishi|Sheikh ul Aalam Sheikh Noor din Noorani]], while visiting through the village, came across a few residents. While having conversations with them he concluded that: "People are friendly and land is blessed but it would have been gold (''sun''), if jealousy (''rath'') would not have been a common trait among locals." The total geographical area of village is {{convert|4.44|km2|sqmi}}. It is located at an elevation of 1,595 m (5,232 ft) above the sea level. People in all the hamlets of Rathsun follow [[Islam]] and the whole of the population of Rathsun belong to [[Sunni Islam|Sunni]] sect of [[Islam]]. Most of the people of the village follows the [[Hanafi |Hanafi School of Thought]]. Much of the local economy is agricultural crops grown include [[rice]], [[maize]], [[vegetable]]s, [[apple]]s, [[walnut]]s, [[pears]], [[apricot]]s and [[almond]]s.
