He was born in middle class family. His father Sitaram Singh Kushwaha was also a politician while mother Sarla Devi is a housewife. His father was a leader of [[Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Unity Initiative|CPI(ML)]] where his grand father Ramjash Mahto was a socialist. His grand mother Vimla Devi was also into politics.
