Constructed in 1913–14, the original grounds covered an area of {{convert|30.226|acre}}.<ref name=governorweb /> The residence was subsequently used by British governors to escape the summer heat in [[Patna]], which was then the capital of Bihar and Odisha.<ref name="Manti2014">{{cite book|first1=J.
