Upadhyaya was an active trade unionist.&amp;lt;ref name=librn/&amp;gt; He led a strike of cigarette factory workers in [[Saharanpur]] in 1973.&amp;lt;ref name=librn/&amp;gt; Following the strike he was imprisoned for six months.&amp;lt;ref name=librn/&amp;gt; He worked with the trade union at Mansurpur Sugar Factory.&amp;lt;ref name=librn/&amp;gt; As CPI(ML) collapsed in the 1970s, Upadhyaya rejoined CPI.&amp;lt;ref name=librn/&amp;gt; The 1981 conference of the Uttar Pradesh Trade Union Council (of [[AITUC]]) elected Upadhyaya as one of its vice presidents.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite book|title=Trade Union Record|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=2HDtAAAAMAAJ|year=1981|publisher=All-India Trade Union Congress|page=54}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
