Nakul Chandra Sahis, Independent, and [[Labanya Prabha Ghosh]], Independent, won in 1957. In [[1952 West Bengal state assembly election|independent India's first election in 1951]], it was a joint seat entitled Purulia cum Hura. The area now part of Purulia district was then part of Bihar.
