The Festival starts on 12 February (Makaram 30) and ends on 24 February (Kumbham 12). The Festival is considered as 'Sangamma' of the people from Kodagu and Kerala. Before the commencement of the festival devotees from Kodagu arrive at the temple with their cattle and offerings of rice that is used 'Prasada oota' for festival time. A variety of legends exist on the beginnings of this festival.<br />

Payyavoor is a hilly village on the eastern side of Kannur district. The terrain is undulating in nature and the extreme eastern side has forests bordering Karnataka state. Payyavoor river flows through the north, and Koottupuzha river (combination of Mundayapuzha River and Payyavoor river) flows through west of the Payyavoor.<br />
