It is an early work in the ''[[Dharani|dhāraṇī]]'' genre of Buddhist literature, with Tibetan records mentioning it by about 800 CE. The ''Pañcarakṣā'' manuscripts survive in Tibet, Nepal and India in many divergent versions.
