Hailing from [[Poompuhar]], [[Tamil Nadu]], P. Krishnamoorthy graduated from the [[Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite web|title=34th National Film Awards, 1986|url=http://dff.nic.in/2011/34th_NFF.pdf|publisher=Directorate of Film Festivals|page=38|accessdate=3 June 2015}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Starting his profession as an artist, he got into films through [[G. V. Iyer]]. He first met Iyer in 1968 when the latter was about to make &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Hamsa Geethe]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, a [[Kannada cinema|Kannada film]]. Krishnamoorthy was immediately signed up despite having no prior experience in art direction. Over the next years, Krishnamoorthy continued to mainly work for Iyer in films such as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Adi Shankaracharya (film)|Adi Shankaracharya]] (1983), &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Madhvacharya (film)|Madhvacharya]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (1986) and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Ramanujacharya (film)|Ramanujacharya]] (1989). Although he entered [[Tamil cinema]] through [[Sreedhar Rajan]]&amp;#039;s &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Kann Sivanthaal Mann Sivakkum]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in 1983, he did not work in Tamil films for a brief phase in his career.&amp;lt;ref name=Dinamani /&amp;gt; In 1987, he won his first [[National Film Award for Best Production Design|National Film Award]] for &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Madhvacharya&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.
