The [[Specific name (zoology)|specific name]] ''manalari'' refers to Upper Manalar in the [[Periyar Tiger Reserve]], which is the [[Type locality (biology)|type locality]].<ref name="Garg et al. 2017" />

== Description ==
The frog has a small head, which is wider than it is long. The [[Tympanum (anatomy)|tympanum]] is indistinct. Adult males measure {{convert|13|-|15|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} in [[snout–vent length]]. The [[Dorsum (anatomy)|dorsum]] is reddish-brown.<ref name="Garg et al. 2017" />

== Behaviour ==
The males of the species were recorded [[Sexual selection in amphibians#Vocal signaling in frogs|calling]] during 7–9 pm, and also during the day at 2 pm. One of the males was located next to an [[egg clutch]] of 8 eggs next to ground vegetation.<ref name="Garg et al. 2017" />

== Habitat and distribution ==
The frog is so far known only from the type locality in the Western Ghats.<ref name=Frost/> The frogs were found hiding under herbs and grasses growing on the edge of a large rocky area at an elevation of {{convert|1564|m|abbr=on}} [[above sea level]].<ref name="Garg et al. 2017" />
