Jayasurya revealed that his role as a transgender person was the most difficult character that he ever played in his career and also revealed that he wanted to play the character of a transgender person to change the aspects and mindsets of the society that it generally thinks upon the transgender people.<ref>{{Cite news|url=http://www.cinemaexpress.com/stories/interviews/2018/jun/14/njan-marykutty-is-my-gift-to-the-lgbtq-community-6500.html|title=Njan Marykutty is my gift to the LGBTQ community: Jayasurya|work=The New Indian Express|access-date=2018-06-14}}</ref> The costume designs for the film were designed by Jayasurya's wife Saritha and the trans woman getup of Jayasurya was used by his wife Saritha to display as the model for the promotion of Saritha's costume design boutique.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/jayasurya-models-marykutty-wifes-boutique-81437|title=Jayasurya models as Marykutty for wife's boutique|date=2018-05-17|work=The News Minute|access-date=2018-06-14}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news|url=http://english.mathrubhumi.com/mobile/movies-music/movie-news/saritha-uses-jayasurya-s-female-getup-in-her-shop-s-ad!-saritha-jayasurya-njan-marykutty-ranjit-sankar-1.2814864|title=Saritha uses Jayasurya's female getup in her shop's ad!|work=Mathrubhumi|access-date=2018-06-15}}</ref> Ranjith later revealed that he was inspired by transsexual actress Anjali Ameer to make a transgender related film.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://m.timesofindia.com/entertainment/malayalam/movies/news/ranjith-shanker-anjali-ameer-inspired-me-to-write-njan-marykutty/articleshow/64684323.cms|title=Ranjith Sanker: Anjali Ameer inspired me to write Njan Marykutty - Times of India|work=The Times of India|access-date=2018-06-22}}</ref>
