In the previous election, the TRS saw a huge wave of support coming and swept the election by winning 88 of the 119 seats. The party that came second was the Maha Kutami alliance, an alliance with TDP, INC, TJS, CPI. However, after the defeat the alliance broke up and the INC with 19 MLA became the opposition. But in 2019 12 of INC MLA, and some other parties MLA all left and joined TRS taking their strength from 88 to 104.

In the 2019 general election however both BJP and INC gave TRS a tough fight with BJP winning 4 and INC winning 3. In addition in 2020 GHMC election BJP made huge inroad by winning 48 seats and reducing TRS to just 56.
