Kar was born on 12 October 1893 to [[Biswanath Kar]], freedom fighter, social activist and founder of '''Utkal Sahitya''' at [[Cuttack]], [[India]]. After passing her entrance examination from [[Calcutta University]] she joined the historical Bethun College, completed her graduation on 1914 and became the first women graduate of Odisha.<ref name="LalPanja2004">{{cite book|author1=Malashri Lal|author-link=Malashri Lal|author2=Shormishtha Panja|author2-link=Shormishtha Panja|author3=Sumanyu Satpathy|author3-link=Sumanyu Satpathy|title=Signifying the Self: Women and Literature|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=hggvzJ9ujgIC&pg=PA51|date=1 January 2004|publisher=Macmillan India|isbn=978-1-4039-2405-6|pages=51–}}</ref> At the age of 16 she married Jitendra Biswas, a Bengali lawyer.
