During the [[1988 Pakistani general election|general elections]] held in 1988, he was unsuccessful for defending his constituency but was elected for the [[National Assembly of Pakistan|National Assembly]] [[1988 Pakistani general election|general elections]] held in 1990 and remained head of the PML.<ref name="Story Of Pakistan (biography)" />

== Later life and death ==
In 1993, he was diagnosed with [[Leukaemia|Leukemia]] and went to the [[United States]] for the treatment where he was treated at the [[Johns Hopkins Hospital]] in [[Baltimore, Maryland|Baltimore]], [[Maryland]], [[United States]], where he died the same year.<ref name=IndependentObit /> He was brought and buried in his locality.<ref name="Gallery, Khalid" />
