On 29 May 2004, while praying in a local mosque in [[Srinagar]], an unknown gunman approached him from behind and shot him. He had been surrounded by around 25 people, leading to speculations that this had been a targeted killing. Some speculated his death was an indirect message to his cousin, [[Mirwaiz Umar Farooq]] who had in the days leading up to the shooting been trying to engage with India for the resolution of the [[Kashmir conflict|Kashmir conflict.]]<br />
