Dr Laksman Jha and Others demanded a Mithila state shortly after independence and the former Chief Minister of Bihar, [[Jagannath Mishra]] has also expressed support for the creation of the state.<ref name="Small States Syndrome in India"/>

The 8th schedule of the Constitution of India includes the recognition of the 22 languages including Maithili (but in Devnagari Script).
