Banerjee read for a BSc in zoology at [[University College London]] and then a [[Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Studies|DMS]] from the Polytechnic of North London (now the [[University of North London]]). In 1970, she started working for Post Office Telecommunications, initially as an operational manager and rising to Director level from 1990 to 1995 in what was now [[BT Group|BT]].
