Clarke was educated at [[St Chad's College, Durham]] and [[ordained]] in 1923.<ref>[[Crockford's Clerical Directory]] 1963/4 p223: London, OUP, 1963</ref> After a [[Curate|curacy]] in [[Anfield (suburb)|Anfield]] he joined a [[Universities' Mission to Central Africa|UMCA]] [[Christian mission|mission]] to [[Northern Rhodesia]]. In 1927 he went with the [[Eccles Establishment]] to [[Bolarum]]. He also served at [[Secunderabad]], [[Wellington, Tamil Nadu|Wellington]], [[Fort St. George, India|Fort St. George]] and [[Madras]], where he was [[Archdeacon]] from 1938 to 1944.
