== Early life ==
Mano Thangaraj hails from [[Karungal]] of [[Kanyakumari district]]. He was elected as the district panchayat chairman from 1996 - 2006.<ref name=":0">{{Cite news|date=22 November 2011|title=Kumari lone ranger on mission mode|work=New Indian Express|url=https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/2011/nov/22/kumari-lone-ranger-on-mission-mode-312589.html}}</ref> He was very much involved in politics right from his college days. He was the students' union chairman of Marthandam Christian College. During his initial years, he has protested against drawing water from the Pechiparai reservoir for the [[Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant|Koodankulam nuclear power]] plant in 1988.<ref name=":0" />
