In 2006 the [[Ministry of Panchayati Raj]] named Madhubani one of the country&amp;#039;s 250 [[Poverty in India|most backward districts]] (out of a total of [[List of districts in India|640]]).&amp;lt;ref name=brgf/&amp;gt; It is one of the 38 districts in Bihar currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. [[Saurath Sabha|Saurath]], a road side village on Madhubani-Jainagar road, contains a temple known as Somnath Mahadev. It owes its importance to the annual Sabha held by [[Maithil Brahmin|Maithili Brahmins]] for negotiating marriages.
