He was born in [[Bhilai]], [[Chhattisgarh]] in a Tamil family. He did his schooling at senior secondary school sector 10, Bhilai. Subramanian holds a [[Master of Business Administration]] and [[Doctor of Philosophy]] (PhD) in [[financial economics]] from [[University of Chicago Booth School of Business]]. His PhD was completed under the supervision of [[Luigi Zingales]] and [[Raghuram Rajan]].
