== History ==
The Cooperative was launched in 1969 with the help of assistance from [[Second E. M. S. Namboodiripad ministry]].<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=Dinesh Beedi@50: From tobacco to cafes and IT, this transformation is priceless|url=https://english.manoramaonline.com/news/kerala/2019/02/28/the-tale-of-kerala-dinesh-cooperative.html|access-date=2020-06-14|website=OnManorama|language=en}}</ref> This cooperative came up as a result of workers' resistance against the exploitation of private capital. From the 1940s the organised labour movement in Kerala has demanded the implementation of special legislation to help beedi workers from the misery of exploitation. The initiatives of A K Gopalan pressurised the Nehru Government to introduce Beedi and Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment Act) in 1966.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2016-05-06|title=As Malayalees Kick The Butt, A Once Proud Beedi-Maker Bets On Biryani|url=https://www.huffingtonpost.in/2016/05/06/dineesh-beedi_n_9855142.html|access-date=2020-06-14|website=HuffPost India|language=en}}</ref><ref name=":0" /> However, the decision to implement the Act was left to the choice of state government.<ref>{{Cite book|last=|first=|title=Beedi and Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment) Act- 1966|publisher=Government of India|year=1966|isbn=|location=https://wblc.gov.in/sites/default/files/upload/content_act_rule_pdf/1_Beedi%20&%20Cigar%20Workers%20(Conditions%20of%20Employment)%20Act,%201966.pdf|pages=}}</ref> This Act was implemented by [[Second E. M. S. Namboodiripad ministry]], hence Kerala became the first state to implement it. This provoked the private beedi companies like ganesh beedi and they shifted their operation from Kerala to Karnataka. This left thousands of workers unemployed. As negotiations with the company failed, the trade union movement in Kerala put forth the idea of developing a cooperative. As a result, the cooperative was inaugurated in 1969.

The E.M.S. ministry invested Rs 1.35 million as share capital and sanctioned a huge working capital loan of Rs 7,00,000 to initiate the functioning of this cooperative.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Rise and Fall of a Workers` Cooperative: The Saga of Kerala Dinesh Beedi|url=https://www.labourfile.com/section-detail.php?aid=307|access-date=2020-06-14|website=www.labourfile.com}}</ref>

GK Panicker IAS, the then Joint Commissioner of Industries Department played a crucial leadership role in shaping the institution.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Urs|first=MV Sasikumar & B.
In the mid-seventies, Dinesh Beedi achieved a significant portion of Indian tobacco market and they increased their profit from Rs 50,000 in 1969 to Rs 44 crore by 1994-95.<ref name=":1">{{Cite news|last=Pulikunnel|first=A.
