The project involves construction of a {{convert|255.60|km|mi|adj=on}} long canal from [[Mayanur (Tamil Nadu)|Mayanur]] in [[Karur district]] to link river [[Kaveri]] with [[Vaigai]]. On 24 June 2008, [[Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.Karunanidhi]] laid the foundation for the construction of barrage.<ref>[http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=451121&sid=REG Project inauguration]</ref> The link canal will run through the districts of [[Karur]], [[Trichy]], [[Pudukkottai]], [[Sivaganga]], [[Ramanathapuram]] and [[Virudhunagar]].
