The son of [[Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom)|lieutenant colonel]] John Barnes Sparks of the [[Indian Staff Corps|Bengal Staff Corps]], he was born in May 1873 at [[Morar Cantonment|Morar]] in [[British India]]. Sparks was educated in England at the [[Britannia Royal Naval College]], before entering into the [[Royal Navy]] as a [[Sub-lieutenant#Navies|sub-lieutenant]]. He was promoted to the rank of [[Lieutenant (navy)|lieutenant]] in September 1894.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=26552|date=14 September 1894|page=5311}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; &lt;br /&gt;

Sparks served in the [[Mahdist War]], commanding the steam gunboat &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Sheikh&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.
