Educated at [[Sedbergh School]] and the [[Royal Military Academy Sandhurst]],<ref>[http://www.angloboerwar.com/index.php?option=com_grid&gid=22_uw_0&p=47 Anglo-Boer War]</ref> Shea was commissioned into the [[Royal Irish Regiment (1684–1922)|Royal Irish Regiment]] as a [[second lieutenant]] in February 1888.<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/locreg/SHEA.shtml Sir John Stuart Mackenzie Shea] Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives</ref> He was promoted to [[Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines)|lieutenant]] on 11 February 1890,<ref name=Hart03>Hart's Army list, 1903</ref> and the following year transferred to the [[Indian Army]] where he was posted to the 15th Bengal Lancers.<ref name=lh/> He saw action with the [[Chitral Expedition]] in 1895, and was promoted to [[Captain (BARM)|captain]] on 11 February 1899.<ref name=Hart03 /> The [[Second Boer War]] started in South Africa later the same year, and Shea was awarded the [[Distinguished Service Order]] (DSO) for leading 200 [[South Australia]]ns in a night attack on Commandant [[Jan Smuts]]'s [[laager]].<ref>[http://alh-research.tripod.com/Light_Horse/index.blog?topic_id=1113468 Desert Column]</ref> For his service in the latter parts of the war, he received a [[Brevet (military)|brevet]] promotion to [[Major (British Army and Royal Marines)|major]] on 22 August 1902.<ref>{{London Gazette| issue = 27490 |page=6907 | date = 31 October 1902 }}</ref> He became an Instructor at the [[Pakistan Command and Staff College|Staff College, Quetta]] in 1906.<ref name=lh/>

Shea served in [[World War I]] initially as a General Staff Officer first with the [[British Expeditionary Force (World War I)|British Expeditionary Force]] and then with [[6th Infantry Division (United Kingdom)|6th Division]].<ref name=lh/> He became Commander of [[151st (Durham Light Infantry) Brigade|151st Brigade]] in 1915, General Officer Commanding [[30th Division (United Kingdom)|30th Division]] in 1916 and General Officer Commanding [[60th (2/2nd London) Division]] in [[Palestine (region)|Palestine]] in 1917.<ref name=lh/> He commanded the 60th Division at the [[Battle of Mughar Ridge]] in November 1917, at the [[Battle of Jerusalem (1917)|Battle of Jerusalem]] in December 1917 and at the [[First Battle of Amman]] in March 1918.<ref name=baker>{{cite web|last=Baker|first=Chris|publisher=The Long Long Trail|title=British Divisions of 1914–1918|url=http://www.1914-1918.net/60div.htm}}</ref>
