He was appointed [[Commander of the Order of the British Empire]] (CBE) on 11 May 1937&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=34396|supp=y|pages=3089–3090|date=11 May 1937}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; and an [[Venerable Order of Saint John|Officer of the Order of St John]] (OStJ) on 20 December 1937.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=34936|supp=y|page=5325|date=30 August 1940}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He retired from the police in 1938.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1939, he was recalled to the Army, serving as Deputy [[Adjutant-General]] with the [[British Expeditionary Force (World War II)|British Expeditionary Force]] in France. After returning to Britain in 1940 he commanded the [[British Home Guard|Home Guard]] in the [[London District]].
