Islam uses a number of conventionally complimentary phrases praising Allah (e.g., ar), or wishing good things upon Muhammad or other prophets and chosen figures of God (e.g., ar). These phrases are encompassed by a number of terms: Prayers upon Muhammad may be referred to simply as صَلَوات, "prayers", , "greetings", or .<!-- In Arabic writing (and speaking) they follow the name of the object of the honorific fully spelled out (fully enunciated), while in English language sources they are sometimes abbreviated, ("Allah (swt)" or "Muhammad (pbuh)"), sometimes spelled out ("Abdurrahman ibn Abi Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu"), sometimes appear spelled out in Arabic, and sometimes appear as a typographic ligature of Arabic calligraphy.}}

Salafi ruling on abbreviating prayers upon Muhammad
Scholars of the Salafi branch of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia have instructed their followers not to abbreviate the ar upon Muhammad. For example, Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, said:
