He was born on, [[Christmas Day]] 1890,<ref>[[Who's Who|“Who was Who” 1897-2007]] London, [[A & C Black]], 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> educated at [[Wellington College, Berkshire|Wellington College]] and [[Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge|Caius]] and ordained in 1915.<ref>[[Crockford's Clerical Directory]]1940-41 Oxford, [[OUP]],1941</ref> He was a [[Church Mission Society|CMS]] [[Missionary]] until he became Principal St Andrew Divinity School in 1930, a post he held for nine years. From 1940 to 1944 he was [[Archdeacon]] of [[Aurangabad, Maharashtra|Aurangabad]] when he became [[Anglican Bishop of Nasik|Bishop of Nasik]].
