Anderson was promoted once more to [[Captain (British Army and Royal Marines)|captain]] on 22 August 1899 and saw active service in [[British expedition to Tibet|Tibet]] between 1903–1904.<ref name="McCrery" /><ref name="LondonGazette2">{{London Gazette| issue = 27127| date = 1899-10-17| page = 6266}}</ref> On 22 August 1906, he was promoted to [[Major (United Kingdom)|major]].<ref name="LondonGazette3">{{London Gazette| issue = 27967| date = 1906-11-13| page = 7632}}</ref> At the outbreak of the [[First World War]] in August 1914, Anderson was promoted to [[Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom)|lieutenant-colonel]] and became the second-command of the [[9th Bhopal Infantry]].<ref name="McCrery" /><ref name="LondonGazette4">{{London Gazette| issue = 28957| date = 1914-10-30| page = 8777}}</ref> The battalion was deployed to France, where Anderson was [[killed in action]] on 29 October 1914 by a shell near [[La Gorgue]].<ref name="McCrery" /> He was buried at Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue.<ref name="CWGC">{{CWGC|id=596614|name=Henry Lawrence Anderson|access-date=2 August 2020}}</ref>
