New page

So, you wrote an article, and now it carries a notice saying it has been nominated for deletion. Do not panic. A nomination is '''not''' a deletion: it only starts a discussion, and the article stays online while that discussion runs. This page explains what is happening and what you can usefully do.

== What has happened ==

An editor believes the article may not meet Bharatpedia's guidelines, most often because the subject's [[Bharatpedia:Notability|notability]] has not been shown with good sources. They have listed it at [[Bharatpedia:Articles for deletion]], where other editors discuss whether it should be kept, deleted, merged or redirected. The notice at the top of your article links to that discussion.

== What to do ==

# '''Read the discussion.''' Follow the link in the notice and read the nominator's reason carefully. Most nominations are about missing evidence of notability, not about you or your effort.
# '''Take part in the discussion.''' You are welcome to comment there. Explain, briefly and politely, why the subject is notable, and back it up with sources. Sign your comments with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>.
# '''Improve the article while the discussion runs.''' This is the most useful thing you can do. Add [[Bharatpedia:Reliable sources|reliable]], independent sources that cover the subject in depth, such as newspapers, books and journals. Remove anything that reads like advertising, and make sure the article is written in a neutral tone.
# '''Be patient.''' Discussions normally stay open for about seven days so that several editors can take part. An administrator then closes the discussion and carries out the result.

== What not to do ==

* '''Do not remove the deletion notice''' from the article while the discussion is open. It will simply be put back, and removing it does not stop the discussion.
* '''Do not ask friends to pile in''' with "keep" comments, and do not create other accounts to support your side. Decisions are made from the strength of the arguments and the sources, not from counting votes, and fake support can get accounts blocked.
* '''Do not take it personally''' or argue with the nominator. A nomination is a normal part of how Bharatpedia keeps its standards, and even experienced editors have articles discussed.
* '''Do not copy the article elsewhere''' on Bharatpedia to keep it alive. Copies created to dodge a discussion are deleted as well.

== Possible outcomes ==

* '''Keep:''' the discussion agrees the subject is notable, and the article stays.
* '''Delete:''' the article is removed. This is the result when no reliable, independent coverage of the subject can be found.
* '''Redirect or merge:''' the article is replaced by a redirect to a related article, sometimes with some of its content merged in.
* '''Draft:''' sometimes the article is moved to the Draft namespace instead, so you can keep working on it and resubmit it when it is ready.

== If the article is deleted ==

Deletion is not always the end of the road:

* You can ask the administrator who closed the discussion for a copy of the text, or for the article to be restored into your user space or the Draft namespace so you can improve it.
* Work on the draft, add the sources whose absence caused the deletion, and ask for feedback before moving it back.
* If you believe the discussion was closed against Bharatpedia policy, or you have found significant new sources that were not considered, you can list the case at [[Bharatpedia:Deletion review]].
* Do not simply recreate the same article with the same content. It is likely to be deleted again, and repeated recreation can lead to the title being protected.
