Create the single-page version of the Introduction to talk pages tutorial

New page

{{short description|Bharatpedia help page}}
This page puts the whole '''Introduction to talk pages''' tutorial on a single page. It has six short parts: talk pages, user talk pages, layout, examples, drawing attention, and a summary.

== 1. Talk pages ==
If you have a question, concern, or comment related to improving a Bharatpedia article, you can put a note on that article's '''[[BP:talk page|talk page]]'''.

You get to the talk page by clicking the "{{int:Talk}}" tab at the top of the article. If the tab shows up in red, it just means no one has commented yet; feel free to start a discussion.

When you start a new discussion topic, put it at the bottom of the talk page. The best way to do this is by clicking the "{{int:Vector-action-addsection}}" tab at the top of the page. This allows you to enter a new section heading and your comments.

If you are responding to someone else's remarks, put your comment below theirs. You can do this by clicking on the "[edit]" link to the right of that section's heading and then scrolling down.

Always sign your comments by typing <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> or clicking the [[File:OOUI JS signature icon LTR.svg|20px|link=|alt=Signature icon]] button. This will automatically insert your {{If IP|IP address (a number representing your internet connection)|username}} and a link to your personal talk page, along with the time you saved the page. {{If IP|If you [[Special:Userlogin|create an account]], your username will become your signature and you will be able to|If you want, you can}} [[Bharatpedia:Signature tutorial|customize how it looks]].

== 2. User talk pages ==
Every editor also has a '''user talk page''': the talk page that belongs to their user page. This is where other editors leave messages for you personally, such as questions, suggestions, thanks and notices.

You can open yours by clicking your username at the top of any page and then the "{{int:Talk}}" tab, or by going to [[Special:MyTalk]]. When someone edits your talk page, you will see a notice about it at the top of the page next time you browse Bharatpedia, so you do not have to keep checking it yourself.

To reply to a message, click the "[edit]" link beside its section heading, add your reply underneath the message, and sign it with <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code>. Starting your lines with a colon (:) indents them, which makes conversations easier to follow.

Help requests work the same way. If you put the {{tl|Help me}} template on your own talk page, a helper will answer you in the same section, right under your question.

User talk pages are public, so write there as politely as you would anywhere else on Bharatpedia. When your talk page gets long, old finished discussions can be moved to an archive page so that new messages stay easy to find.

== 3. Layout ==
A talk page stays easy to read when every discussion follows the same layout. Three habits do most of the work.

'''One topic, one section.''' Every new topic gets its own section, started at the bottom of the page under a clear heading. Replies to that topic stay inside its section, so readers can follow one conversation at a time.

'''Indent your replies.''' A reply goes directly underneath the comment it answers, and starts with one more colon than the comment above it. In the source text, colons at the start of a line look like this, and this is how they appear on the page:

The first comment starts at the edge of the page.
:This reply is indented once.
::This answer is indented twice.
:::Each extra colon moves the comment one step further in.

'''Sign every comment.''' Ending with <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> puts your name and the time on the comment, which keeps it clear who is answering whom.

When a thread has been indented so many times that the text becomes hard to read, start your next reply back at the edge of the page and say that you are continuing the same point. Never change another editor's signed words: if you disagree, add your own signed reply instead.

== 4. Examples ==
Here is what a well laid out discussion looks like in practice. Two editors are talking on an article's talk page, inside one section:

<div style="border:1px solid #a7d7f9; background:#f8f9fa; padding:0.2em 1em 0.8em 1em; margin:0.5em 0;">
=== Should the lead mention the award? ===
The lead does not mention the national award, although the body of the article covers it. I think one line in the lead would balance the summary. Sana Kapoor, 09:12, 14 March 2026
:I agree. The award is the most reported fact about her, so the lead looks incomplete without it. Imran Sheikh, 10:03, 14 March 2026
::I have added one line to the lead with the existing source. Please check the wording. Sana Kapoor, 10:40, 14 March 2026
:Before we finish, the year in the body says 2019 but the source says 2020. I will correct that too. Kavita Rao, 11:25, 14 March 2026
</div>

Notice the pattern. The topic has its own heading. Every reply sits directly under the comment it answers, one colon deeper. Each comment ends with the writer's name and the time, so the whole conversation can be followed from top to bottom without opening the page history.

On your own user talk page the same layout appears in reverse: someone leaves a message in a new section, and you answer underneath it in the same section, indented once.

== 5. Drawing attention ==
Sometimes a question sits on a talk page and nobody answers, simply because the right people have not seen it. There are polite ways to draw attention to it.

'''Start where the topic belongs.''' Post on the talk page of the article itself first. Editors who watch that page will see the new section in their watchlist and may answer there.

'''Ping one editor.''' If a particular editor knows the topic, mention them in your comment. Linking their username, or using the {{tl|Ping}} template, sends them a notification, as long as the comment is signed in the same edit. For example, writing <code><nowiki>{{Ping|Example}}</nowiki></code> at the start of a signed comment alerts that editor.

'''Leave a note on their talk page.''' A short message on the editor's own user talk page is a friendly direct request. Say which article and which discussion you would like them to look at.

'''Ask a wider audience.''' General questions can go to the [[Bharatpedia:Help desk|Help desk]] or the [[Bharatpedia:Teahouse|Teahouse]], and matters for the whole community go to the [[Bharatpedia:Village pump|Village pump]]. If you need help with your own editing, put {{tl|Help me}} on your own talk page and a helper will come to you.

Give people time to reply. One reminder is fine, but posting the same request in many places at once usually slows things down rather than speeding them up.

== 6. Summary ==
You have now seen the whole talk page system. A quick review of what you have learned:

* Every article has a talk page for discussing improvements to it, reached through the "{{int:Talk}}" tab.
* A new topic starts a new section at the bottom of the page, under its own heading.
* Replies go under the comment they answer, indented with one more colon each time, so the thread stays readable.
* Every comment is signed with <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code>, so it is always clear who wrote what, and when.
* Your user talk page is where other editors leave messages for you, and where helpers answer your {{tl|Help me}} requests.
* Good layout, clear headings and polite messages draw other editors in: pinging someone, the [[Bharatpedia:Help desk|Help desk]] and the [[Bharatpedia:Village pump|Village pump]] are there when a discussion needs more eyes.

That is everything you need to join a discussion. For the fuller reference version of the same material, see [[Help:Talk pages]].
