He is an alumnus of the [[National Defence Academy (India)|National Defence Academy]]. He completed his graduation from [[Defence Services Staff College]]. Singh was a senior research fellow at the [[Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses]] in India and the [[S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies]] in Singapore.<ref name=unmissions/>

Harinder Singh has held many important positions in the [[Indian Army]]. He has been the Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI), Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and Director General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement at the Integrated HQ of MoD (Army).<ref name=tribune/> He is considered a [[Counter-insurgency]] expert.

The situation in Ladakh saw a massive mobilization of troops and equipment on both sides and loss of lives not only in violent clashes but also due to weather and terrain related ailments to which troops suddenly inducting from plains were subjected to without presence of any viable infrastructure in Ladakh.
