In [[2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election]], [[Kunga Nima Lepcha]] of [[Sikkim Krantikari Morcha|SKM]] won in both Shyari and Gangtok constituencies, so he relinquished Gangtok seat. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In the by-election, ruling SKM didn’t send their candidate to Gangtok, and supported for opposition [[Bharatiya Janata Party|BJP]]. Former ruling [[Sikkim Democratic Front|SDF]] participated the Sikkim Legislative Assembly election as the opposition for the first time in 25 years. Opposition [[Sikkim National People’s Party|SNPP]]&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;SNPP was established in 10 October, 2008, but its registration had not been  passed by [[Election Commission of India|ECI]] till 25 September, 2019.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; and [[Sikkim Republican Party|SRP]] sent their candidates to Gangtok for the first time. Opposition [[Indian National Congress|INC]] boycotted this by-election.&lt;br /&gt;
