			Speciality: The Ganakas of Assam have practiced astrology and medicine since ancient times. The ancient name of Assam, Pragjyotishpur (প্ৰাগজ্যোতিষপূৰ), literally means "a place where jyotish (astrology) was practiced since ancient times" (prag meaning "ancient" or "before"). These people are the Jyotishis (জ্যোতিষী) / astrologers who have practiced astrology since antiquity. The Ganakas were very skilled in mathematical and astrological calculations. From the name "Surya Bipra," one can infer that they follow a solar calendar (the Surya Panjika).
