His success as an artist took off following the publication in 1955 of his autobiographical essay &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Nirvana of a Maggot&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in [[Stephen Spender]]&amp;#039;s [[Encounter (magazine)|Encounter magazine]]. Spender introduced Souza to the art dealer [[Victor Musgrave]].  Souza&amp;#039;s 1955 exhibit at Musgrave&amp;#039;s Gallery One sold out, leading to ongoing success.
