Educated at [[Eton College]] and the [[Royal Military Academy, Woolwich]], Squires was [[Commissioned Officer|commissioned]] into the [[Royal Engineers]] in 1903.&amp;lt;ref name=bio&amp;gt;{{cite book |author=Lodge, A. B. |url=http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A120050b.htm |title=Squires, Ernest Ker (1882–1940) |work=[[Australian Dictionary of Biography]] |volume=Vol. 12 |publisher=Melbourne University Press |year=1990 |pages=41–42 }}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He transferred to the [[Bombay Engineer Group|3rd Sappers and Miners]] in India in 1905.&amp;lt;ref name=bio/&amp;gt; In 1912 he married Ethel Elsie Risley.&amp;lt;ref name=bio/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
