The son of Arthur Foster Shattock, he was born at [[Wandsworth]] in April 1887 and was educated at [[Dulwich College]].<ref name="BOOK">{{cite book |title=Dulwich College Register: 1619 to 1926|first=Thomas Lane|last=Ormiston|date=1926|page=378|publisher=J. Limited|url=https://archive.org/details/dulwichcollegere0000ormi|language=en}}</ref> Travelling to [[British India]], Shattock served in the British India Army Reserve with the [[7th Hariana Lancers]] during the [[First World War]], gaining the rank of [[Second_lieutenant#United_Kingdom_and_other_Commonwealth_countries|second lieutenant]] in July 1918.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=31187|date=18 February 1919|page=2439}}</ref> In India, Shattock played [[first-class cricket]] for the [[Europeans cricket team]] on eleven occasions in the [[Madras Presidency Match]]es between 1915 and 1927.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/14/14541/First-Class_Matches.html|title=First-Class Matches played by Ernest Shattock|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=18 November 2022|url-access=subscription}}</ref> Playing as a [[wicket-keeper]] in the Europeans team, he scored 321 runs at an [[batting average (cricket)|average]] of 16.05; he made two half centuries, with a highest score of 74.
