			After Northern Railway (former, now under North Central Railway) set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.<ref>{{Cite web\|title=Report of the Expert Committee on Coal Consumption on Railways, 1958\|url=http://www.indianculture.gov.in/report-expert-committee-coal-consumption-railways-1958\|access-date=2020-04-29\|website=INDIAN CULTURE\|language=en}}</ref> To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad-gauge lines from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to rest of India with the completion of gauge conversion, the Kanpur was selected by Indian Railways for a new electric locomotive shed.<ref>{{cite web\|title=Electric loco shed location\|url=http://indiarailinfo.com/station/map/erode-junction-ed/39\|access-date=2016-11-23}}</ref>

			After the electrification of Mughalsarai(Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar)-Kanpur section the shed was established with a holding of 11 imported [[Indian locomotive class WAM-1\|WAM-1]] locomotives. In the late 1990s[[Indian locomotive class WAG-2\|WAG-2]] and [[Indian locomotive class WAG-4\|WAG-4]] which were the last remaining locomotives and which stayed until late 2000, when they we're withdrawn from service/scrapped.
