[[Vijayawada]] is home to various educational and research institutions. Education in Vijayawada is based on three-tier model which includes primary and secondary schools, followed by intermediate colleges (higher secondary schools or junior colleges) and tertiary education at universities or other institutes of same level. A few schools also offer the [[International Baccalaureate]] and the American systems. Schooling begins at the age of three with two years of kindergarten, followed by ten years of primary and secondary education. [[Andhra Pradesh Board of Secondary Education]] regulates and supervises the system of [[secondary education]] in the state. It conducts SSC/OSSC examinations twice in a year. One is the Main examination in March month and another is Supplementary Examinations May / June months. Students who pass these exams are qualified to study intermediate education (or higher secondary education).

== Intermediate/higher secondary education ==
For [[10+2]] education, there are two government junior colleges, namely S.R.R. & C.V.R. Government College and Government Junior College (at Vinchipeta); Institutes offering such kind of education mode through state board are often called as "Junior colleges" or "Intermediate colleges". [[Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh|Board of Intermediate Education]], situated in the city, is responsible for regulating intermediate education. Various junior college chains were started from the city. Students who completed this level of education were qualified to have higher education.

== Higher education ==
Annually thousands of students were being qualified to have higher education after qualifying in competitive exams such as [[EAMCET]], [[Joint Entrance Examination]], [[National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)|NEET]], [[National Aptitude Test in Architecture|NATA]], etc. Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education regulates the higher education related to all government and its affiliated universities and colleges.

[[Andhra Loyola College]] is the oldest surviving higher education institute in Vijayawada. [[Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences]] is the largest medical university founded in 1986 by [[N. T. Rama Rao]]. [[Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation|KL University]] is the only major deemed university, established 1980.

Other prominent self-financed educational establishments include [[Kakarparthi Bhavanarayana College]] (1965), [[Satavahana College]] (1971), [[Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College]] (1977), [[Siddhartha Medical College]] (1980) and [[Potti Sriramulu College of Engineering & Technology]] (2008).

== Libraries ==
The [[Sarvottama Granthalayam]] is a city library established on 30 March 1987.
