Dharmavaram tank was constructed by Kriyasakthi Odeyar. The name of the city was derived from the name of his mother, ''Dharmamba''.<ref name=info />

Dharmavaram is a hub for pure silk sarees. The economy of the town is dependent on the weaving industry.
