== Legend ==
The ''Vrat Katha'' (the story of the vrat) is associated with a king who faces misfortune due to the rejection of the vrat. There was an arrognat king, however his wife was devout. Once, she saw a group of women performing rituals at a river bank near the palace. The queen inquired her maid about the rituals. The maid found out about the rituals, which were of the Dashama vrat and informed the queen. The queen started the vrat however the King was not happy and told her to stop it. By this action, the King faced the wrath of the patron goddess - Dashama. His gifts turned to stone, flowers in his garden dried; he lost his kingdom and his two sons. He was jailed by another king. In jail, he realises his mistake and started the vrat. == Vrat ==
On the [[amavasya]] (new moon day) of the [[Hindu month]] of [[Ashadha]], devotees observe Dashama vrat by installing a ''Sandhani''{{what}} made of soil in their home. Devotees also install a ''[[murti]]'' (icon) or image of the goddess [[Momai|Dashama]] with an icon of the Hindu god [[Ganesha]].
